The
Black church is truly the heart of the African-American community. In fact, you
may say that it is the community. Throughout all of our struggles in American
history, the Black church has been a constant in our evolution. It fed our hope
during slavery and was our meeting place during the Civil Rights Movement. Through
bombings and burnings, it stands strong, "steadfast and unmovable." With the
good news of Jesus Christ, it is a beacon of light that shines on all those who
are broken, weary, and downtrodden.
It serves as the center of the African-American community's spiritual growth
and time will prove that the Black church will be the center of the African-American
community's economic growth as well. There is no greater or more powerful institution
that exists today for any group of people than that of the Black church.

Even as George Zimmerman stands trial for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, many Americans argue these laws make us safe. I've had pistols held to my head from Bosnia to Beirut. Your best self-defense is your tongue. Those who put their faith in guns will ultimately be outgunned...one of the most common ideas emerging after the Trayvon Martin tragedy with Florida’s Stand Your Ground law is that guns make you safe. My experience is exactly the opposite. Handguns like the one George Zimmerman used to shoot and kill the African-American teenager merely enable those who use them to make fatal mistakes. Mr. Zimmerman is now out of prison on bail, awaiting trial for second-degree murder, when a $20 can of pepper spray could have possibly defused the confrontation without loss of life.

A man crashed his car outside a Colorado church and opened fire on people who had come to his aid, fatally wounding the mother of the church's pastor before an off-duty officer attending service shot him dead.
The pastor of Destiny Center Church, Delono Straham, said the woman killed Sunday was his mother, Josephine Echols, a nurse from Flint, Mich., who most recently had been working with dialysis patients at a local hospital. She had gone outside to see if anyone needed medical attention...

An increasingly popular, yet ugly and threatening term in the African-American culture is “gentrification...As I was thinking on this social malady, I was reminded of the truth that often our black churches are also to blame for our own brand of gentrification. This can be done in two ways...Let’s be real about this. The congregation that allowed God “to stick His chest out,” the Acts 2 church, besides being in one place, was also in “one accord.” The “commonness” that existed among them was simply their determination that not a single member of the flock would feel unwelcome and unvalued. The result? - Thousands “being added” in one day. The congregation that is lifted by God’s love will consistently help elevate those with whom they come in contact. Gentrification practiced by God's people? - Let it not once be named among us.

...Mormons believe that heaven consists of a great network of families bound together through a particular sacramental ritual called sealing. Parents are sealed to children, spouses to each other, ancestors to descendants.
